I still hate this change, it's a great disappointment and I'm just looking at how to sex up twitter to make it tolerable for me to use :P

Good luck. I suspect you'll find that social networks don't do that well from advertising due to a lack of commercial intent. You should also look at sponsorship and letting users/advertisers buy extra functionality.
